Town Hall Meeting

This Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Legion your municipal council and staff will be eagerly awaiting your questions and comments about how our municipality is being run. I’m just wondering out loud what sorts of issues will be most discussed.

One thing that I know will come up will be the long awaited road repairs on the Dorman Road hill. That one will be easy. Staff will reassure the affected citizens that the matter is well in hand and everything will be put right this summer. The discussion will drift to road maintenance in general and all will be assured that council and staff are well aware of their concerns and a concerted effort is under way to bring things up to snuff. Our property taxes will go up to cover this more aggressive program but that may escape the spotlight.

From there the discussion could well turn to the need to widen Miller and Government Roads at the main corner but before long it will turn to the near death experiences many have seen at the Cardena intersection during ferry loadings. Council and staff will then be able to report on their ongoing efforts to work with BC Ferries to reconfigure the main road east of Cardena and build a terminal. I don’t know how far they’ve gotten but there may be some good news on this front. With any luck the discussion won’t get hung up on how to deal with BC Ferries. That could consume an endless amount of time.

One has to think that a forum such as this will be too tempting for our various special interest groups to pass up. In fact you will probably get a chance to see a few would-be councilors tuning up their public speaking skills and taking the opportunity to promote themselves while pointing out some difficulties with the current crew.

The recent expansion of the recycling depot and what items can be handled will be given a plug. But maybe this will lead into a discussion about where we want to go, as a community, from here. There are initiatives around composting and a re-use-it store. Talking about these types of things may move the meeting away from being a gripe session and toward being a first step towards future initiatives.

I’m sure that many more timely and interesting topics will be discussed but unfortunately I’ll miss the meeting. We’ll be on our way to the airport to catch a plane to Spain. I like the sound of that – “a plane to Spain”. I’ll let you know how it goes in our next issue sometime in mid June. “A plane to Spain”, ahh.
